Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer said on Monday that he had accepted the resignation for the 59th government led by Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Sezer said in a written statement released by Presidential Press Center that he had approved the resignation of Council of Ministers, which was submitted by Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday.
Sezer asked the Council of Ministers to continue to fulfill its duties until the new government is formed, added the statement.
Erdogan, who is also chairman of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), said earlier that he had submitted resignation for his government to President Ahmet Necdet Sezer. The AKP won the parliamentary elections held on Sunday, gaining national votes of 46.5 percent. Erdogan announced on Sunday night that the AKP would continue to be the ruling party of the country. In 2002 AKP became as the first party since 1987 from the polls with 34.29 percent of votes and formed a single-party government.
