Yves Leterme, the man widely expected to become Belgium's next prime minister, started formal talks on Tuesday in a bid to form a new government, VRT news reported.
Leterme, a prominent Flemish Christian democrat and former Flemish premier, has invited five center right parties to take part in the negotiations. He spoke individually with the leaders of the five parties on Monday. On Monday, Leterme unveiled a document which will form the basis of the discussions. The document entitled "The Power of People" looks to encourage people to work more by cutting income tax for low and medium wage earners and by changing the unemployment benefit scheme.
Leterme's party won general elections in June, deposing former prime minister Guy Verhofstadt.
