A call by Sri Lanka''s main Tamil political party to stage a protest against the government in the island''s war battered north and east was met with a mixed reaction on Wednesday, the police said.
Only the northern town of Vavuniya observed a complete shutdown with all state offices, schools and business establishments closing down and public transport coming to a standstill. In the rest of the main towns in Northern and Eastern provinces the protest action did not meet with any success, said the police. However, TNA (Tamil National Alliance) sources said the protest action was observed with success in the eastern town of Batticaloa and the northern town of Jaffna. The TNA, a pro-Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) political party, made the protest call against the government move to set up a High Security Zone (HSZ) in the Eastern Province town of Muttur.
"We urge Tamil speaking people to protest against the Sri Lanka government''s violation of human rights in proclaiming Muttur as a HSZ," the TNA said Wednesday in statement. Clashes erupted in Muttur last August when the LTTE raided the town and kept it under its control for at least two days. [1] [2]
