A joint police and Army search has been launched to track down two paramilitary home guards who have been reported missing, Sri Lankan defense officials said Friday.
The two home guards have been missing since Thursday night at Aluthgama in the north central Anuradhapura district, police said.
They had departed riding their cycles for a personal matter and had been reported missing since then.
One of the cycles belonging to the two was found Friday morning, raising fears of abduction by the Tamil Tigers, police said.
In the early hours of Monday, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels were accused of gunning down four home guards in the northern district of Vavuniya.
Meanwhile, the military spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said that six LTTE rebels were killed on Thursday night in the northern district of Mannar.
Violence continue in the island's separatist armed conflict with more than 5000 people having been killed in the upsurge of clashes since the end of 2005.
Claiming discrimination at the hands of the majority ethnic Sinhalese-dominated government, the LTTE has been fighting for an independent homeland for Sri Lanka's 12.5 percent Tamil minority since the 1970s.
