At least three soldiers were killed in a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels attack on the security forces in the northern Jaffna peninsula of Sri Lanka, defense officials said Tuesday.

The road side bomb targeting the troops went off at Jaffna's Varani area around 4:45 p.m. local time (1115 GMT).

The soldiers were proceeding to fetch water from a nearby well when the blast happened, officials said.

More than 5,000 people have been killed in the conflicts between the government troops and the rebels since 2005.
