Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev said Friday that preparations for the Bishkek summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), scheduled for mid-August, were ready.

Leaders of the SCO members will talk at the gathering on achievements made by the organization since the 2006 Shanghai summit, and regional and global issues, and will sign a series of documents.

The primary task of the SCO, which comprises six member countries, namely China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, was still safeguarding regional security, Bakiyev, whose country currently holds the presidency of the SCO, said at a joint interview held by media of the SCO member states.

The SCO member states should have closer cooperation to jointly combat the forces threatening regional security, drug-trafficking and illegal arms trade, he said.

No country in the world is able to win the anti-terror war by itself, he noted.

Bakiyev also reprimanded press reports in Western media on so-called SCO threat.

The SCO was devoted to safeguarding peace and making borders between the member states peaceful and harmonious places and would not pose threat to any country or organization, he stressed.

The principles of mutual respect, mutual trust and mutual benefit and reciprocity, pursued by the SCO, are the basis of the organization's developments, he said.

"Kyrgyzstan is member of many international and regional organizations, but we feel totally equal in the SCO and are never under any pressure," he said.

The SCO has demonstrated its importance and indispensability, and its tremendous political, economic and cultural potential since it was established six years ago, said the president.

In recent years, an increasing number of countries have expressed their desire to become official members of the SCO, which demonstrates the organization has broad prospects for development, said Bakiyev.

Bakiyev said, his country, as the current president of the SCO, would not only maintain continuity of the organization's policies, but make new contributions to its developments.
