Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced Tuesday his government has purchased Argentine bonds worth 500 million U.S. dollars.

Venezuela intended to buy another 500 million dollars' worth in the coming months, said Chavez at a press conference before leaving for Uruguay, the second stop of his Latin American tour which will also take him to Ecuador and Bolivia.

Chavez called the move a step to help an allied nation free itself from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

"Argentina is freeing itself from Dracula, breaking the chains of the International Monetary Fund," Chavez told a televised news conference before heading to Uruguay.

Chavez said the deal was highly important for the two nations' political and geopolitical ties upon arriving in Argentina Monday.

Meanwhile, Chavez said he plans to sign energy pacts with most countries on his stops, as with Argentina.

Venezuela has decided to build a plant to reliquify natural gas for Argentina, which is currently caught in an energy crisis. He said the plant could be completed within two years.
