The Sri Lankan Air Force bombed a Tamil Tiger rebel position in the island's northern Mannar district on Wednesday, defense officials said.
They said that Air Force fighter bombers attacked and destroyed a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) sea wing base at Kondachchikuda in Mannar at around 4:15 p.m. local time (1045 GMT).
In the nearby Vavuniya district, LTTE rebels launched a claymore mine attack on army troops on foot patrol around 1:15 p.m. (0745 GMT), injuring two soldiers.
The clashes in the island's long drawn out separatist conflict have shifted to the north after the government in mid-July claimed that the entire Eastern Province had been cleared of the LTTE.
The troops are now thought to be targeting LTTE bases in the north.
Nearly 70,000 people have died in the conflict since the mid- 1980s as the LTTE seeks to set up a separate homeland for the minority Tamils in Northern and Eastern provinces.
