Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Mexico have agreed that two airlines from each country can operate flights in the Mayan region, Mexico's Communication and Transportation Ministry (SCT) said Sunday.
The accord was signed by the tourism ministers of the four nations and by Mexico's Civilian Aeronautic General Department, the SCT stated in a communique.
The accord seeks to "encourage airway tourism and transportation in the Mayan region," which includes important cities such as Copan (Honduras) and Chichen Itza (Mexico), the SCT said.
As an example of "full airway connectivity" a Mexican airline will be able to fly to Cancun, in the Mexican Caribbean, and Tikal, Guatemala, to pick up more passengers before continuing its route to a third country.
The accord means that each signatory country can begin to operate flights to the Mayan region without restrictions.
Passengers flying with these airlines will be allowed to stop at two different cities in one country.
