Sri Lankan airforce attacks rebel positions in north |

Sri Lankan airforce bombers raided Tamil Tiger positions in the country's north, defense officials said here on Wednesday.
Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe, the military spokesman told reporters that fighter bombers had taken Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) sea wing targets of Mullathivu in the north around 7.30 a.m. local time and "the attacks were successful."
He also accused the rebels of using a demilitarized zone in the north to fortify its defenses and to step up their recruitment during the period from July to mid August.
The rebels and the government troops had agreed to treat the Madu church area in the northern Mannar district a demilitarized zone until the catholic church's main feast concluded on Aug. 15.
Samarasinghe said that the rebels had launched several attacks on the government troops from Madu area during the last few weeks but the troops had shown restraint.
More than 5,000 people have been killed in the new wave of violence since the end of 2005.
