Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister S. Jayakumar said Wednesday Singapore needs to remain vigilant and strengthen efforts against terrorism.
Speaking at the fifth National Security Seminar, Jayakumar said that world is highly inter-connected, and extremist ideology can spread easily at the click of a mouse as the internet is a medium for "self-radicalization", local television Channel NewsAsia reported.
Society must be sensitized to the fact that a terrorist attack can happen at anytime, especially when it is least expected, he said.
"Phrases like 'cannot let our guard down' and 'cannot take things for granted'...may sound like cliches but the reality is that it is tough and it becomes increasingly difficult to ask people to remain vigilant in an environment that so far has remained free from attacks," local radio 938LIVE quoted him as saying.
"It is during such times when no terrorist attacks have taken place, that the danger of complacency increases," he added.
The National Security Seminar aims to let senior officers network and share their experience on national security issues, according to Channel NewsAsia.
