Phua Kok Khoo, president of Singapore-China Friendship Association (SCFA), on Saturday denounced the Taiwan authorities' proposed referendum on U.N. membership in the name of Taiwan.

In an interview with Xinhua, Phua said the move by the Taiwan authorities will not benefit Taiwan and will jeopardize stability and peace in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large.

Phua, also president of Singapore-China Business Association, said he supports the Singaporean government's stand of adhering to the one-China policy and not supporting Taiwan's bid to seek U.N. membership under any appellation.

"The attempt by Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian will be quite harmful to the relationship between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits and peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and the world as a whole," he said.

Describing the Taiwan authorities' move as "disgusting, despicable and dirty acts," he said the Taiwan authorities are playing such tricks to cheat the Taiwanese people and attempt to unilaterally alter the status of Taiwan.

Overseas Chinese around the world strongly denounce and look down upon the Taiwan authorities' maneuver, firmly believing that their attempt to hold a referendum on U.N. membership on the island is doomed to failure, he added.

Singapore has repeatedly voiced its opposition to any unilateral move to change the status of Taiwan and criticized the Taiwan authorities' attempt to seek U.N. membership as "provocative and irresponsible."
