Sri Lankan Army and the Tamil Tiger rebels have exchanged mortar fire in the north of the island, defense officials said Sunday.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels fired mortars at the Army at Kokkuthuduwai area in the Welioya district bordering north with the east around 7:30 p.m. Saturday (1400 GMT), officials said.

The Army retaliated with mortar fire. No damages and casualties on both sides not known, officials said.

The Army and the rebels clash often in the northern province after the government in July claimed that the entire eastern province had been cleared of rebels.

Analysts say it was only a matter of time before the military make moving into the rebel strongholds in the north.

Heavy rebel resistance is expected. More than 5,000 people have been killed in the new wave of violence since the end of 2005.
