Sudanese Foreign Minister Lam Akol said here on Friday that the situation in the Darfur region of Sudan is improving rather than worsening.

Speaking to reporters after the second UN high-level consultation on Darfur, Akol denied reports that the Darfur region is in great turmoil although he confessed that attacks by rebels did occur in the region.

Sudan's government troops have been trying their best to repel the rebel attacks and to keep the situation under control, Akol added.

On cooperation between Sudan and the United Nations and the African Union over Darfur issues, the Sudanese official said that Sudan is implementing its agreement with the two world organizations and is confident the cooperation will continue.

In June, Khartoum reached an agreement with the United Nations and the African Union on a hybrid peacekeeping operation in Darfur led by the two organizations.

A United Nations high-level meeting on issues of Darfur was held here Friday and the participants urged all parties concerned to prepare for negotiations which are due to begin on Oct. 27 in Libya.

Representatives from 26 countries, the European Union and the League of Arab States participated in the second UN high-level consultation which was co-chaired by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and AU Commission Chairperson Alpha Oumar Konar.

"The parties should seize this unique opportunity to resolve the conflict," said a joint press communique by the United Nations and the African Union.
