The British government has reiterated that Britain does not recognize Taiwan as a state or country.
Speaking on Taiwan's referendum on UN membership, a spokeswoman for Britain's Foreign Office said in an email interview with Xinhua Friday night,"Our position on Taiwan is well known and has not changed."
"We do not recognize Taiwan as a state or country, nor its authorities as a government," she said.
"We acknowledge the position of the Chinese government that Taiwan is a province of China and recognize the position of the Chinese government as the sole legal government of China," she added.
