Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit on Monday urged Israel to join the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and subject all its nuclear installations to the International Atomic Energy Agency safety principles and standards.

Abul Gheit made the remarks in a press statement received by Xinhua, noting that Egypt will go on with its efforts to bring all countries to be committed to the NPT and render the Middle east free from all weapons of mass destruction including nuclear weapons.

Abul Gheit called on Israel to stop its attempts with the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) to change rules governing the peaceful use of nuclear energy, which are unacceptable and do not serve peace and stability in the Mideast region, the statement said.

Israel is trying to undermine Egypt's efforts to set up a nuclear-free Mideast by insisting on ignoring all international resolutions urging Israel to join the NPT, the Egyptian top diplomat asserted.

He lauded the NSG for its rejection of the Israeli attempts, urging the group not to cave in to Israel in the future under any pretext.

The NSG is a multinational body concerned with reducing nuclear proliferation by controlling the export and re-transfer of materials that may be applicable to nuclear weapon development and by improving safeguards and protection on existing materials.

Moreover, Abul Gheit called on western countries to end their double-standard policy in handling nuclear and disarmament issues as they ignored Israeli attempts and failed to take clear stance towards Israel while they are threatening to tighten sanctions on Iran to dissuade it from carrying on with uranium enrichment activities.
