Turkish authorities on Wednesday detained 20 people in southeastern Turkey, suspecting them of having meetings with the leadership of the banned Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) in Iraq, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported.
The 20 people, most of them are university students, were detained at the Habur Border Pass in Silopi town of Sirnak province and have been sent to the Silopi Prosecutor's Office, according to the report.
High level security measures have been taken at the Silopi Prosecutor's Office, said the report.
The PKK has increased its attacks on government troops in southeastern Turkey, which led to rising Turkish demands for an incursion into northern Iraq to crush the rebels based there.
The group, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, launched an armed campaign for an ethnic homeland in the mainly Kurdish southeastern Turkey in 1984, sparking decades of strife that has claimed more than 30,000 lives. Source: Xinhua
