The Sri Lankan military said Monday that Army troops were under attack of Tamil Tiger rebels in the southeastern Ampara district but no casualties have been reported.

Officials from the Media Center for National Security said a government jeep belonging to the Wild Life Department and some soldiers were attacked by LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) rebels in Ampara's Thalgasman kadawa area at about 6:30 p.m. local time (1300 GMT).

No casualties have been reported at the moment, officials added.

More than 5,000 people have died in the escalating conflict in the island country since the end of 2005.

Claiming discrimination at the hands of the Sinhala majority, the LTTE has been fighting the government since the mid-1980s to establish a separate homeland for the minority Tamils in the north and east.
