Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels attacked an army detachment in southeastern Sri Lanka Monday evening but no casualties were reported, defense officials said.
Udaya Nanayakkara, the military spokesman said that suspected Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels attacked the Talgasmankada military detachment in the Yala wild life park at about 6:00 p.m. local time (1230 GMT).
"A wild department jeep was also fired at as the LTTE attacked the small army post at Talgasmankada," Nanayakkara said, adding that troops reinforcement were dispatched to the area.
Defense officials said the jeep returned safely and no casualties were reported.
Meanwhile, four LTTE rebels were killed in a confrontation with troops manning the Muhamalai forward defense line in the Northern Jaffna peninsula around 2 p.m. (0830 GMT), officials said.
In the northern Vavuniya district, two soldiers were wounded in a small arms attack launched by the LTTE around 9:30 a.m. (0400 GMT).
LTTE rebels and the government troops have had regular confrontations in the island's Northern Province since the middle of September.
Nearly 150 combatants from both sides were killed in the last 10 days of clashes, Nanayakkara told reporters earlier on Monday.
Claiming discrimination at the hands of the Sinhala majority, the LTTE has been fighting the government since the mid-1980s to establish a separate homeland for the minority Tamils in the north and east.
More than 5,000 people have been killed in the new wave of violence sine the end of 2005.
