Three Tamil Tiger rebels were killed and more rebels were injured by government troops in clashes in northern Sri Lanka on Wednesday, the Army said Thursday.
The Army said in a statement that two confrontations erupted between government troops and LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) rebels when these LTTE rebels tried to breach the security lines at Navatkukam and Karampikulam in the northern Vavuniya district on Wednesday.
At least three Tamil Tiger rebels were killed and a large number of other rebels were injured in the clashes, the statement said.
Ten anti-personnel mines belonging to the rebels were recovered after the incidents, the statement added.
Clashes between LTTE rebels and government troops have been happening frequently in northern Sri Lanka since mid-September.
Claiming discrimination at the hands of the Sinhala majority, the LTTE has been fighting the government since the mid-1980s to establish a separate homeland for the minority Tamils in the north and east.
More than 5,000 people have been killed in the new wave of violence sine the end of 2005, making the Norwegian brokered cease-fire agreement exist only on paper.
