The co-ruling Funcinpec Party's permanent committee has chosen Princess Norodom Arunrasmy as the party's premiership candidate for the 2008 national election, local media said on Thursday.
The party council congress set to take place on Thursday will officially approve the earlier appointment of the princess as the candidate for prime minister, Funcinpec Secretary General Nhiek Bun Chhay told Cambodian-language newspaper the Sralanh Khmer.
The appointment meant to end rumors that the party will elect Prince Norodom Ranariddh, former president of the party who was removed from his post by a party congress a year ago, as premiership candidate for the election.
Funcinpec senior officials, however, said that they intended to promote women in the party.
Princess Norodom Arunrasmy is the wife of the current Funcinpec president, Keo Puth Rasmey. She has never been involved with corruption allegations.
Funcinpec has co-governed the kingdom with the major ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) for years. CPP nominated current Prime Minister Hun Sen for the premiership contest in the next election.
