At least 13 Tamil Tiger rebels were killed and 10 government soldiers were injured in clashes between government troops and Tamil Tiger rebels in northern Sri Lanka on Thursday, the Army said.

The Army officials said that heavy fighting between government troops and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels broke out when the LTTE rebels tried to storm the security lines twice at Periyathampant in the northern Vavuniya district during morning hours.

At least 13 Tamil Tiger rebels were killed and a large numbers of other rebels were injured in the clashes, the Army officials said.

Ten soldiers also were injured in the battles, the Army officials added.

Clashes between the two sides have been happening frequently in northern Sri Lanka since mid-September.

Claiming discrimination at the hands of the Sinhala majority, the LTTE has been fighting the government since the mid-1980s to establish a separate homeland for the minority Tamils in the north and east.

More than 5,000 people have been killed in the new wave of violence sine the end of 2005, making the Norwegian brokered ceasefire agreement exist only on paper.
