Five Tamil Tiger rebels were killed and six rebels injured in attacks launched by Sri Lanka's Army in the north of the island on Thursday, defense officials said Friday.
Officials of the Media Center for National Security said that four LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) rebels were killed and two rebels were injured in an attack launched by the Army at Vilayaathikulam in the northern district of Vavuniya around 8:05 a. m. local time (0235 GMT).
In another attack, one rebel was killed and four rebels were injured at Yodawewa in the northern district of Mannar around 8:20 a.m. (0250 GMT), officials said. No damage was reported to the troops in the two battles, officials added.
Clashes between LTTE rebels and government troops have been happening frequently in northern Sri Lanka since mid-September.
Claiming discrimination at the hands of the Sinhala majority, the LTTE has been fighting the government since the mid-1980s to establish a separate homeland for the minority Tamils in the north and east.
More than 5,000 people have been killed in the new wave of violence sine the end of 2005, making the Norwegian brokered ceasefire agreement exist only on paper.
