One Tamil Tiger rebel was killed and more rebels were injured in an attack launched by the Army in the north of Sri Lanka on Saturday, the military said.
The Media Center for National Security said in a statement that the Army launched an attack on a group of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels who were attempting to break the Forward Defence Line at Nagarkovil in the northern district of Jaffna this morning.
One rebel was killed and more rebels were seriously injured in the attack, the statement said, adding that three LTTE bunkers were also destroyed.
Clashes between LTTE rebels and government troops have been happening frequently in northern Sri Lanka since mid-September.
Claiming discrimination at the hands of the Sinh ala majority, the LTTE has been fighting the government since the mid-1980s to establish a separate homeland for the minority Tamils in the north and east.
More than 5,000 people have been killed in the new wave of violence since the end of 2005, making the Norwegian brokered ceasefire agreement exist only on paper.
