Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Tuesday reiterated his country's resolve to realize peace and security in the Middle East to bring about a better future for the region without wars and threats.

Mubarak voiced the determination in a speech marking the 5th anniversary of the reborn Bibliotheca Alexandrina in the northern Egyptian port city.
Egypt is working actively to realize a just regional peace to guarantee the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and to pave the way for a comprehensive peace, said Mubarak.

He expressed Egypt's resolve to support every serious and sincere move towards peace and security, as the country sticks to the option of peace.
The Egyptian president also noted that his country spares no effort to consolidate joint Arab action, unify stands and heal any rifts in relations with and among the Arab brothers.

Egypt understands the close link between its own national security and the security of the region, and the strong connection between the Egyptian causes and aspirations and those of the Arab brothers, Mubarak noted, adding that Egypt's peace and stability hinges on the peace and stability of the entire Middle East.

On domestic affairs, Mubarak noted that Egypt is going through a lengthy transitional phase of its political and economic experiment, as the democratic process and steps to shift to the market economy are going apace.

The 79-year-old Egyptian president promised keenness on the social dimensions of the reforms, committing to protect the poor and low-income brackets of the society from the adverse impact of a rapidly developing economy during the transitional period, which cannot be imagined as a road full of roses.

Meanwhile, Mubarak stressed a national consensus that freedom is both a responsibility and a commitment and ends when it encroaches on the freedoms of others.
