The Egyptian National Democratic Party's General Secretariat on Monday reelected Safwat al-Sherif as the ruling party's secretary general, the official MENA news agency reported.
Sherif's re-election came at a session chaired by President Hosni Mubarak during the ongoing ninth NDP General Conference after Mubarak nominated Sherif to be a member of the new General Secretariat which was elected on Sunday with 34 members in conformity with the party's statutes.
Meanwhile, Zakaria Azmi, Moufid Shehab and Gamal Mubarak, who is President Mubarak's second son, were chosen as assistant secretary generals.
The 73-year-old Sherif, who is also Speaker of the Shura Council (Egypt's upper house of parliament), was first elected the NDP secretary general at the eighth NDP General Conference in 2002.
On Saturday, President Mubarak was reelected the NDP chairman at a special session in advance of the inaugural meeting of the party's Ninth General Conference which will end on Tuesday with economic reform and national security listed as top priorities for the ruling party.
The 79-year-old veteran statesman of the Arab country has been in the top post of the ruling party in 1982 shortly after he came to power as president of the country following the assassination of President Anwar Sadat in 1981.
The NDP, established in 1978, obtains almost four-fifths seats of the 454-member People's Assembly (Egypt's lower house of parliament).
