Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda plans to organize a meeting of leaders from 25 countries to discuss the world climate change prior to the Group of Eight summit meeting slated for next July in northern Japan's Hokkaido, the major Yomiuri Shimbun reported Tuesday.
Leaders from the G-8 major nations will also be invited to the "climate changes summit," which is to be held at the same venue as the G-8 summit meeting.
Fukuda has already instructed relevant ministers to make arrangements for such a meeting and his government has begun working-level talks with countries such as the United States, the newspaper said.
By hosting such a meeting, Fukuda eyes a widespread international agreement on climate change and intends to show his determination to play a leading role in combating global warming, sources were quoted as saying. Source: Xinhua
