Albania's top prosecutor was sacked on Thursday by the country's president for allegedly failing to fight crime and corruption and a new one was appointed to replace him.
In a move widely anticipated, President Bamir Topi sacked Theodhori Sollaku, who had been fighting for almost two years the efforts by Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha to overthrow him for being slow in fighting organized crime and corruption.
Sollaku has denied the allegations.
President Topi nominated Ina Rama, 35, to replace Sollaku as the tiny Balkan country's top prosecutor. The Parliament is expected to approve her appointment, where the ruling Democrats coalition hold the majority of the 140 seats.
"The president sacked the prosecutor because his office has not done enough to take on organized crime and corruption, which have negatively affected the state's functioning," the president's office said a statement.
Sollaku said his dismissal was politically motivated, calling it a "political farce" that violated the constitution.
