Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Chairperson Benazir Bhutto on Monday told visiting Turkish President Abdullah Gul that her party would contest the forthcoming general elections in Pakistan, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported.
Benazir met with Abdullah Gul and exchanged views on matters of bilateral and mutual interest. "The meeting was very useful and we discussed all issues of bilateral interest including transition of power in Turkey," Benazir said when addressing reporters after the meeting.
"I also briefed the visiting Turkish President on my party's decision to contest the upcoming general elections as the PPP understands that elections would help strengthen the democratic process," she said.
Replying a question, Benazir said that her party was going on with President Pervez Musharraf step by step.
Nawaz Sharif, former PM and top leader of the opposition Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), is scheduled to meet Benazir here on Monday evening in a bid to persuade her to join the opposition parties' boycott of the general elections.
The All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM), an opposition parties alliance including PML-N, announced on Nov. 29 that they would boycott the general elections in principle.
