The Cyprus government welcomed a resolution adopted by the UN Security Council on Friday which extends the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus for another six months through June 15, 2008.
"The government of the Republic of Cyprus expresses its satisfaction with the resolution which fully supports the July 8 Agreement ..." government spokesman Vassilis Palmas said in a statement.
Palmas noted a number of positive points and references included in the resolution, adding all these were the result of the tireless efforts by President Tassos Papadopoulos and Cypriot government for "a functional and viable settlement of the Cyprus problem."
In a resolution adopted unanimously earlier Friday, the council noted with concern the lack of progress on "the July 8 process" and called on all parties to immediately engage constructively with the U.N. efforts, and to cease mutual recriminations.
It urged all parties to show flexibility and political will over the coming months to make measurable progress to allow fully fledged negotiations to begin.
On July 8 last year, the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders signed a set of principles and decisions, recognizing that the status quo was unacceptable and that a comprehensive settlement was both desirable and possible.
They agreed to begin immediately a two-track process involving discussions by technical committees of issues affecting the day-to-day life of the people, and concurrently, consideration by working groups of substantive issues leading to a comprehensive settlement.
