Although the People Power Party (PPP) is determined to secure a victory in Sunday's general election to lead the next coalition government, it is also willing to join the Democrat Party to form a national government to overcome the turmoil, PPP party secretary general Surapong Suebwonglee said Thursday.

"If it is extremely necessary for the national government to emerge, then the PPP is ready to cooperate with every party, the Democrats included," news network The Nation quoted him as saying in a TV interview.

PPP and its main rival, the Democrat Party, are tipped as the two leading parties in the race for this Sunday's election with the PPP, the first since former elected prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra was ousted.

Surapong said the PPP, deemed a nominee party for Thaksin, was trying to garner a majority of votes to form a coalition government and that the party leader, Samak Sundaravej, was ready for the job as prime minister.

He dismissed speculation that his party would nominate him as the prime minister and designate Samak as the House speaker.

At this juncture, with two days left before the election, the PPP's top priority was about the campaigning and not about the various formulas to form the coalition, he said, adding that any serious negotiations with coalition partners would need the voting outcome as a starting point.

He said his party would not repeat its mistake of forming such a strong government as to be perceived as a parliamentarian dictatorship.

He said former prime minister Thaksin, who faced several corruption charges and now resided in self-exile in Britain, would return to clear his name through due process following the balloting.
