Deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said Tuesday he expected to return to Thailand "by April at the latest".
The former prime minister told a news conference here that he expected to return to Thailand from exile "by April at the latest".
"I want to go back to politics and go back and live my life as a normal citizen," he said.
When asked to clarify his remarks on going back to politics, Thaksin said, "I am quitting politics. I will not take any political position except when they want any ideas."
He said he could change his mind if the situation in Thailand changed.
"I have no wish to go back to politics until I feel safe, and then I will have to assess the situation."
The pro-Thaksin People Power Party (PPP) has won Thailand's post-coup general elections.
Thaksin also hailed the return of democracy to Thailand following the Dec. 23 elections.
