Thailand's Election Commission (EC)on Wednesday received a threatening telephone call which proved tobe a bomb hoax after its Tuesday's ruling to disqualify House Speaker Yongyuth Tiyapairat, EC secretary general Suthiphon Thaveechaigarn said.
"The EC has requested police to strengthen security as a precaution," Suthiphon was quoted by local news network The Nationas saying.
EC chairman Apichart Sukhagganond said the legal proceedings against Yongyuth would proceed as planned, shrugging off the fear for reprisal.
Meanwhile, the People Power Party secretary general and deputy prime minister, Surapong Suebwonglee, said his party viewed the electoral fraud charges involving Yongyuth as personal affairs and hoped the proceedings would be in accordance with the judicial and democratic principles.
"It is too early for the speculation whether the case involving Yongyuth would trigger the judicial review for the disbandment of People Power Party," he said.
On Tuesday, Yongyuth announced he would voluntarily step aside from his parliamentary duties after the EC resolved to pursue legal action against him for alleged electoral violations.
The EC is expected to bring the case to the Supreme Court within two weeks. Source: Xinhua
