Tunisian Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi said on Friday he firmly believes that the 2008 Beijing Olympics will turn out to be a great success.

When meeting with Li Beifen, China's new ambassador to the northern African country, Ghannouchi said the Chinese government and its people have made great efforts for the upcoming Beijing Olympics and they will surely be awarded with the success of the games and the recognition by the world.

Ghannouchi spoke highly of China's development, saying China has achieved noteworthy economic growth and improved the living standards of its people in recent years.

The prime minister also noted the increasingly important role China is playing on the world stage. He said committed to world peace and stability, China has taken a pragmatic and responsible attitude and a balanced view on issues such as the Palestinian-Israeli peace process, Iraq and Iran, among others.

Tunisia has put great emphasis on ties with China and is willing to work with the Chinese side to bring bilateral relations to a higher level, Ghannouchi said.

For her part, Li said the friendship between China and Tunisia has a long history and bilateral cooperation has been pushed forward steadily in various fields.

She said with concerted effort, the friendly cooperative ties between the two countries will reach a higher level.

The Chinese ambassador also expressed gratitude to Ghannouchi for Tunisia's donation to China's earthquake-hit Sichuan province.
