During the International Symposium on the Tea Industry's Scientific and Technological Innovation and Strategic Cooperation on April 26, secretary general of the China Tea Marketing Association, Wu Xiduan said, "China produced 1.24 million tons of tea last year, becoming the world's largest tea producer." Wu said China's tea output has continued to rise over the past years increasing by between 70,000 and 80,000 tons per year. China exports 290,000 tons of tea annually.

The International Symposium on the Tea Industry's Scientific and Technological Innovation and Strategic Cooperation, one of the themed activities of the 2009 Beijing Maliandao International Tea Culture Festival, was held at the Laoshe Teahouse. Renowned experts from countries including China, Russia and Kazakhstan discussed topics related to scientific innovation, cultivation of international brands, joint expansion of international markets and other trade issues regarding tea plantation, processing, logistics and marketing.

Wu said raising tea quality, lowering tea production costs, improving the tea planting environment and boosting benefits is the trend for China's tea industry's development in the future, as well as the direction for the international tea industry's development.
