On July 15, the British government issued The UK Low Carbon Transition Plan. It outlines the specific methods to reduce the amount of carbon emissions from 1990 levels by 34 percent, to be achieved by 2020. The plan will cover many areas including energy, industry, transportation and housing.

This is the latest action taken by the UK after the goal was set to reduce global emissions at the G8 summit in L'Aquila, Italy. Objectively speaking, when it comes to climate change, the EU has taken a world lead by not only setting long term objectives, but also working out specific procedures.

The EU objectives for 2020 are as follows: a 20 percent reduction on 1990 levels of greenhouse gas emission, renewable energy to account for 20 percent of the total and a 20 percent decrease in energy consumption. Of all the EU countries, the UK is a pioneer in coping with climate change. The drama of dealing with climate change and promoting a low carbon economy has already raised its curtain in the UK.
