Thailand's Air Force Commander-in-Chief Chalit Pukphasuk, one of the military officers who launched a military coup in 2006, said Friday former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra could return to politics if he clears the charges against him.

During a press conference held on Friday, when asked whether Thaksin could return to the political arena if he is able to clear the legal charges against him, Chalit said "Yes, he can because all Thais can join politics."

He also said Thaksin should return to the kingdom soon to defend himself in court, local news network The Nation reported.

It is the first time for a military officer who involved in the coup said Thaksin could return to politics conditionally after Thaksin was banned from politics for five year by the court in May, 2007.

Just one week ago, Chalit announced the disbandment for Council for National Security (CNS) of Thailand, the real power authority after the coup in 2006, saying since the new government has set up, there was no necessary for the CNS to cling the power.
