Indonesian National Family Planning Coordinating Board (BKKBN) chief Sugiri Syarif said on Tuesday Indonesia's population is increasing by 3 million each year.
In the launching ceremony of a Family Planning Services Month held in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan Province, Syarif said the number of Indonesia's population is now recorded at 226 million which meant that Indonesia has become the fourth most populous country after China, India and the United States.
Syarif said the increase of Indonesian population was relatively big but the growth rate was relatively slow thanks to the implementation of the national family planning program.
In order to make the family planning program successful, Indonesia has applying two family planning program systems, namely the use of contraceptive devices and the appeal on young couple to delay their marriages.
Indonesia, after launching its family planning program, was ranked 50th in the list of countries with fast population growth.
