Jay Lefkowitz, the U.S. special envoy on human right of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), may visit an inter-Korean industrial complex in DPRK's border city of Kaesong next week, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported on Wednesday.
Lefkowitz will visit South Korea on July 22-24, and he applied for permission to visit the Kaesong industrial complex on the first day of his visit to South Korea, Yonhap quoted unnamed South Korean official as saying.
People usually need to file an application four weeks ahead of any visit to the Kaesong complex. It is unclear whether he will receive approval from the DPRK because he applied too late, Yonhap said.
Lefkowitz previously planned to visit the Kaesong complex in July 2006 but canceled the trip after Pyongyang conducted missile tests.
A total of 72 South Korean labor-intensive manufacturers are operating in the inter-Korean industrial zone located just north of the inter-Korean border. More than 30,000 DPRK workers are working for the South Korean companies in the complex.
