Malaysia's de facto opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, who was accused by his aide for sodomy, was taken to a hospital here on Wednesday for DNA testing, a local newspaper reported.

Anwar Ibrahim, adviser of PKR (The People's Justice Party), was taken to the Hospital Kuala Lumpur at about 8:35 p.m. among heavy police presence after spending about seven hours at the city police headquarters, The Star said on its website.

Police said that Anwar would be in the hospital for a routine checkup which was a required procedure.

Earlier Monday, Anwar reportedly was picked up by the police from his residence here and taken to the Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent headquarters at 1:15 p.m.

Anwar's lawyer Sankara Nair said that Anwar was arrested for investigations for alleged "carnal intercourse against the order of nature".

He said if needed, Anwar might be held under remand for 24 hours or up to 14 days to facilitate investigations.

Malaysia's police chief Musa Hassan Wednesday said that the arrest of Anwar to assist police investigations in connection with a sodomy complaint against him, was a normal practice in investigating criminal cases and followed the legal process, according to Malaysia's New Straits Time.

It was normal practice for all parties including Anwar, as accused persons to come forward to give their statements to enable police to conduct investigations fairly, he told reporters after arriving at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport this afternoon from Brunei.

Musa also advised supporters of Anwar not to do anything against the law, or police would not hesitate to act, according to the website of the newspaper.

Anwar's former aide, Mohamad Saiful Bukhari Azlan, 23, lodged apolice report on June 28 this year, alleging that he had been sodomised by Anwar at a condominium in Kuala Lumpur on June 26.

Anwar denied the allegation and filed a defamation suit against his former aide for making false accusations, according to the newspaper.
