Exit polls have shown incumbent Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin will win Sunday's metropolitan gubernatorial election with a wide margin to gain another four-year term at the post in the Thai capital.
Apirak then held a press conference at around 4:00 p.m. (0900GMT) to announce his victory.
Leading poll agencies have predicted Apirak's landslide victory in Sunday's election, which kicked off at 8:00 (0100GMT) and ended at 3:00 p.m. (0800GMT).
The Dusit Poll shows Apirak, a candidate of the opposition Democrat Party, winning 52.08 percent of the votes, followed by Prapas Chongsanguan of the ruling People Power Party who received 23.23 percent.
Controversial business tycoon and independent runner Chuwit Kamolvisit came out third with 12.10 percent and scholar Kriengsak Chareonwongsak also from the Democrat Party, was put at fourth with 11 percent.
The ABAC Poll gave Apirak a smaller margin of victory, with 44.07 percent, followed by Prapat, 23.23 percent. Chuwit received 14 percent and Kriengsak 12.64 percent.
Another Ramkhamhaeng University poll also showed Apirak received about 45 percent of the votes cast.
The exit results came unsurprised as Apirak has been considered the strongest contender in the election.
Official rusults of the election are expected to come out Sunday evening.
