President-elect of the United States Barack Obama assured his support to Afghanistan in an telephone conversation with Afghan president Hamid Karzai on Saturday night,a statement released by Afghan Presidential Palace Sunday said.

"The United States is committed to bringing peace and security to Afghanistan and in this regard U.S. would continue to further support the Afghan government and Afghan people," the statement quoted Obama as saying.

Obama stressed that war on terror and stabilizing security in Afghanistan, the region and the whole world would remain his administration's top priority, according to the statement.

Afghan president once again congratulated Obama for wining presidential election and hoped that the U.S. would achieve more progress under his leadership as the president.

In his first message for congratulating Obama being elected as U.S. president early November, Karzai asked for a change of U.S. strategy on Afghan war, saying "the war on terror should be conducted in areas where the sanctuaries of terrorists and their training centers exist."
