Sri Lanka's military said Tuesday that another key location has been wrested from the control of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels.
Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara, the military spokesman, said that Sinnaparanthan in the northern Kilinochchi district was taken under the control of the Army's advancing brigade.
The troops are well on the way to achieving the objective of capturing the LTTE's political headquarters of Kilinochchi, Nanayakkara said.
Meanwhile defense sources said the rebels had handed back to the military the bodies of some 12 soldiers killed in the battles which raged in the Kilinochchi and Mullaithivu districts in the recent days.
A death of an aid worker was reported from the northern capital of Jaffna Tuesday when a local employee of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was shot, ICRC spokesperson said.
The 45-year-old aid worker from the minority Tamil community was gunned down opposite the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Jaffna at around 7.10 a.m. (0150 GMT).
