A staff member of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was killed in a shooting incident in northern Sri Lanka on Tuesday, the humanitarian organization said.
"We are shocked by the news of the death of our colleague Sivasundaralingam Gangatharan and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends," said Anthony Dalziel, the ICRC's deputy head of delegation in Colombo, in a statement.
According to the statement, Gangatharan was the father of two children and had been working with the ICRC since 1999.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning in Sri Lanka's northern Jaffna peninsula while Gangatharan was exiting a bus on his way to work.
Local police authorities are investigating to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to this tragic death.
Sri Lankan government forces have been fighting the Tamil Tigers rebel group for more than 30 years. So far over 70,000 people have lost their lives in the violence.
