Myanmar traders will participate in an international jewelry show to be held in Mumbai, India next month, aimed at expanding its international market, the local weekly Popular News reported Wednesday.

The five-day show will take place at the Bombay Exhibition Center from August 19 to 23.

Besides, the businessmen will also join another international gems and jewelry show in September to be held at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Memorial Exhibition Center in the capital city of Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The three-day gems show from September 2 to 5 will be attended by a group of 22-member Myanmar delegation led by the Union of Myanmar Federation Chambers of Commerce and Industry, displaying minerals, jewelries such as ruby and pearl.

Domestically, Myanmar held a special gems emporium at the Myanmar Convention Center in Yangon early this month, earning over 700 million euros (885.5 million U.S. dollars) from the sale of over 7,000 jade lots and gems.

The 7,000 jade lots were among the 11,500 displayed at the emporium which lasted from June 25 to July 7 and the major buyers came from China and the event also attracted customers from both Europe and America.

The event was also joined by over 300 state-owned and private- run companies as well as gold and jewelry shops with their quality products put on sale on the basis of competitive bidding.

Myanmar, a well-known producer of gems in the world, boasts ruby, diamond, cat's eye, emerald, topaz, pearl, sapphire, coral and a variety of garnet tinged with yellow.

The government's Central Statistical Organization revealed that in the fiscal year 2009-10, Myanmar so far produced over 22,600 tons of jade and 9.5 million carats of gems which include ruby, sapphire, spinel and peridot, as well as 229,951 mommis (862.3 kilograms) of pearl.
