Quake-stricken Canterbury region in New Zealand's South Island could be hit by floods from rising rivers.

Severe weather warnings were issued to the region in wake of Saturday's 7.1 magnitude earthquake.

Numerous instances of fallen trees and power lines were brought to the attention of councils and emergency service agencies on Sunday, some of which knocked out power lines and caused road blocks.

Civil Defence predicts that the Waimakariri River could burst its stop-banks if water levels continued to rise at the expected rate.

Engineers will be monitoring the stop-banks on Monday morning.

About 150 people have been evacuated as an emergency precaution from a holiday park near Kaiapoi.

The region continued to be hammered by aftershocks with dozens of quakes measuring up to 4.8 on the Richter scale.
