Mekong Delta provinces urged to build inter-regional policies on investment attraction

The regional provinces in Mekong Delta should cooperate closely to build inter-regional policies on investment attraction, said Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung at an investment seminar on Monday.

The seminar, held by Vietnamese Ministry of Planning and Investment in the country's southern Can Tho city, drew more than 700 government officials and experts, Vietnam News Agency reported.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said that Vietnam is creating a favorable environment for the Mekong Delta's development. Mekong Delta has become Vietnam 's biggest rice bowl and aquaculture, and it is becoming the country's energy source, said Dung.

Dung expected Mekong Delta provinces to closely cooperate to build inter-regional policies on investment attraction and boost the region's strengths in rice producing, aquaculture and energy.

The regional provinces should create favorable conditions to apply a common mechanism for promoting and attracting investment into the Mekong Delta, Dung said.

Representatives at the meeting urged the region to put more investments on transport infrastructure development, processing industry, agriculture and human resources to enhance the Mekong delta connectivity and increase economic growth. The Mekong Delta consists of 13 provinces and cities with the population of 18 million people. The Mekong Delta is Vietnam 's largest agricultural production region which accounts for about 90 percent of the country's rice exports and 60 percent of the country's seafood exports each year, according to Vietnamese official statistics.
