Malaysian police confirms Jemaah Islamiyah member arrest

Malaysian chief police, Ismail Omar confirmed Wednesday that the police arrested a member of the Al-Qaida-linked militant group, Jemaah Islamiyah under the Internal Security Act or ISA, a law that allows for detention without trial.

The 63-year-old Indonesian businessman Abdul Haris Syhuhadi was detained last Sunday after police, who have been observing him, found him to be a threat to national security.

"I believe his activities can endanger national security and we will take appropriate action," Ismail told reporters here.

He said Abdul Haris was suspected of spreading the Jemaah Islamiyah ideology and actively recruiting new members to join the group since 2002.

Abdul Haris was the ninth person to be arrested by the Malaysian government this year under the ISA.

Last month, a Singaporean businessman was detained under the same act over alleged links to a militant group in Southern Philippines.
