The Delhi High Court Wednesday rejected the bail plea of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu- based Members of Parliament (MP) Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar, both accused in the multi-billion-dollar 2G spectrum scam.
"Considering the political and financial clout of the accused, the possibility of them tampering with evidence and influencing witnesses, the magnitude of the offence they've been charged with, their bail pleas are dismissed," said the High Court refusing bail to 43-year-old Kanimozhi who co-owns a TV channel with Sharad Kumar in Chennai.
"There's prima facie evidence to suggest they were beneficiaries and received illegal gratification," the judge said while dismissing the bail plea of the duo who are now lodged in the Tihar jail in the national capital.
The young MP from the DMK, which recently lost power in Tamil Nadu, has been accused of accepting a Rs 214-crore bribe along with former Telecom Minister A. Raja, who is also from her party, and is now in jail.
Kanimozhi and Kumar were arrested in May by India's premier probe agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation, for their role in the 2G spectrum scam.
