Indonesia hosts preparatory meeting towards Rio+20 environmental summit

Indonesia commenced on Tuesday an international meeting jointly attended by officials from international organizations, aimed at drafting the institutional framework for sustainable development that would be brought to Rio+ 20 environmental summit scheduled for 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a statement released by Indonesian environment affairs ministry said here.

"The world is watching our meeting here today, waiting for initiatives and breakthrough ideas aimed at reinforcing the institutional framework to address the sustainable development issue. What we are discussing today is not only for the sake of current generation, but also for the future one as well," Indonesian Environmental Affairs Minister Gusti Muhammad Hatta said in his remarks to open the meeting held in city of Solo, Central Java province, dubbed as "Solo Meeting".

The minister added that the meeting highlights discussions on how to create constructive, coherent, strong and effectively- coordinated institutional framework that addresses sustainable development issue.

The meeting, officially called "High Level Dialogue on The Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development (HLD IFSD)", would last in July 21, attended by 350 officials from 90 countries, 56 United Nations bodies and environment activists. It was co- organized by Indonesian Environmental Affairs Ministry and the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD).

Speaking in the opening session, Sha Zukang, Under-Secretary- General for Economic and Social Affairs, secretary-general of The 2012 UNCSD, said that the meeting proves Indonesia's leadership in global efforts to comply with international environment agendas.

"We can create and draft good regional and international institutional framework to address sustainable development issue. But without political commitments it cannot work well," Zukang said
